Stamp 1G Ireland: What It Means for Non-EEA Spouses

Someone tells their spouse: "I'm on a work permit, so once we're married you'll get Stamp 4 too." It's said with confidence, and it's usually wrong. This mix-up causes more disappointment than almost any other misunderstanding I see in practice, so let's clear it up properly.

What Stamp 1G Actually Is

If you are the non-EEA spouse or partner of someone who holds a General Employment Permit or Critical Skills Employment Permit, meaning your partner is not an Irish citizen but has their own work permit, you don't receive Stamp 4 when you arrive. You receive Stamp 1G instead.

Stamp 1G still gives you full work rights in Ireland without needing your own separate employment permit. That part is genuinely good news, and it's often lost in the disappointment of not getting Stamp 4 immediately. You can take almost any job, for almost any employer, right away.

What Stamp 1G doesn't give you is the same status as your partner. It is a permission in its own right, with its own conditions and its own path forward.

What It Gives You Practically

Full work rights, without an employment permit tied to a specific employer or role. For most spouses, this is what matters most day to day: being able to find a job and start working without waiting on separate permit paperwork.

What Stamp 1G doesn't cover is self-employment or running your own business. That only opens up once you move onto Stamp 4.

The Path Forward From Stamp 1G

After a period of continuous, compliant residence on Stamp 1G, generally around five years, you may become eligible to apply for your own Stamp 4, independent of your partner's status. This requires good character, no breaches of your permission conditions, and no significant absences from Ireland during that period.

This is a completely separate clock from your partner's own Stamp 4 timeline. Your partner reaching Stamp 4 through their CSEP or GEP does not automatically move you forward. Your five years on Stamp 1G run independently.

"Stamp 1G means I can't work." You can. Stamp 1G holders generally have full work rights without needing their own employment permit. Self-employment is the main restriction, not employment itself.

"My path to Stamp 4 runs on the same clock as my partner's." It doesn't. These are two entirely independent timelines running in parallel, not together.
